India aces the art of Microgreens Cultivation

Microgreens, the delicate shoots of vegetables and herbs, are fast becoming a household favorite in India. Not only do they enhance the flavor and freshness of meals, but they also come packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. With minimal care, these tiny greens can be grown right in your kitchen, balcony, or even a sunny windowsill — and the best part is that they are ready to harvest in just 10 days.

Unlike full-grown vegetables, microgreens require very little space, making them ideal for urban households. Popular choices for the Indian climate include fenugreek (methi), mustard, coriander, radish, sunflower, broccoli, and wheatgrass. Experts recommend mustard and fenugreek for beginners due to their easy germination and quick yield.

Step 1: Choosing Seeds
Always buy organic, untreated seeds safe for consumption. Soak them overnight before planting — about six hours for mustard, 12 hours for sunflower.

Step 2: Preparing the Tray
Any shallow container, like an old baking tray or a plastic box with drainage holes, works well. Spread a thin layer of cocopeat or potting soil at the base.

Step 3: Sowing and Covering
Evenly scatter soaked seeds over the surface, press gently, and cover with a light layer of cocopeat. Avoid burying them too deep.

Step 4: Watering and Germination
Mist lightly with a spray bottle to avoid waterlogging. Cover the tray to maintain darkness for the first two days. Tiny sprouts usually appear by day three.

Step 5: Light and Care
Once sprouts emerge, uncover and place the tray in indirect sunlight. Regular misting keeps them fresh and healthy.

Step 6: Harvesting
By day 10, the greens will be ready. Use scissors to cut just above the soil line, rinse, and enjoy.

Cultivating microgreens is an affordable way to add freshness and nutrition to daily meals. With little effort and just a dash of patience, Indian homes can harvest their own mini garden in under two weeks.
