Food Coloring and Tobacco Identified as Major Causes of Cancer: Experts

Lucknow | The Department of Radiation Oncology at Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, organized a special press interaction for cancer survivors, highlighting that early detection and awareness are key to defeating cancer. Survivors shared their journeys, inspiring other patients with stories of resilience and recovery.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Neeraj Rastogi, Dr. Mohammad Suhaib, Dr. Resham Srivastava, and Dr. Nilesh Agarwal emphasized that tobacco, cigarettes, and pan masala account for nearly 40% of cancers in men and 15% in women. Avoiding these substances can prevent a large portion of India’s cancer burden. They also noted that artificial food colors significantly increase cancer risk.

Doctors explained that breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, and self-examination plays a vital role in early diagnosis. To promote awareness, Medanta has launched an instructional video and organizes community camps where nurses demonstrate the correct technique.

Experts said that if detected in the first or second stage, 80–90% of cancer cases can be cured, while recovery is still possible in advanced stages with the right treatment. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy together offer the best outcomes, helping most patients resume normal life within six months.

Highlighting preventive care, specialists advised maintaining a balanced diet, proper sleep, and regular intake of fruits and vegetables to boost natural immunity.

Dr. Rakesh Kapoor, Medical Director of Medanta, remarked, “Cancer should not be feared but understood. With timely detection and proper care, it can be completely overcome. Awareness is the strongest weapon in this fight.”
