IIA Celebrates 40 Years of Supporting MSMEs with Commitment and Achievements

The Indian Industries Association (IIA) marked a milestone in its history as it celebrated 40 years of service to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. The anniversary, observed at the IIA Bhawan in Lucknow, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and academicians in recognition of IIA’s journey from a small entrepreneurs’ collective to a powerful industry voice with more than 15,500 members across India.

Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Anupriya Patel, who attended the celebration as chief guest, commended IIA for its enduring role as a trusted partner of MSMEs. She lauded the association’s consistent efforts to resolve industry challenges and its contribution to India’s MSME-driven growth story. Patel remarked that sustaining an organization for four decades is rare, adding that MSMEs remain crucial to India’s aspiration of becoming a developed nation by 2047. She also assured full government support in enabling MSMEs to compete effectively in the global market.

The commemorative event highlighted IIA’s origins in 1985 in Meerut, when a few entrepreneurs came together to address everyday issues faced by small industries. Over time, the association grew into a recognized institution, working closely with government ministries and departments to ensure the sector’s concerns were addressed promptly. This sustained engagement helped cement IIA’s reputation as a credible platform for advocacy, problem-solving, and policy input.

The anniversary celebrations were marked by symbolic gestures and forward-looking initiatives. Instead of the traditional lamp-lighting, dignitaries inaugurated the event with water collected from seven rivers, underscoring the importance of water conservation. Several projects were launched, including the IIA Evolution & Skill Development System, a new edition of the MSME Knowledge Bank, and the IIA Chatbot designed to provide businesses with instant support and guidance.

Another highlight of the event was the launch of the Industry–Academia Connect program, featuring a “Shark Tank” style session where startups from IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur, Invertis University, and Future University, Bareilly pitched innovative ideas before an audience of 150 industry leaders. The initiative drew wide appreciation and is set to continue as a regular platform for fostering innovation.

IIA President Dinesh Goyal, in his address, paid tribute to the past leaders who laid the foundation of the association and emphasized the future potential of Uttar Pradesh as a hub for medical equipment manufacturing. He reiterated the importance of promoting “Vocal for Local” to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen indigenous industries.

The event also honored former IIA presidents for their contributions, culminating in the cutting of the 40th anniversary cake. Treasurer Awadhesh Agarwal delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective effort that has kept the association strong for four decades.
