Mango Magic! UP’s First Fruit-Based Winery Opens in Malihabad
Lucknow: In a first for Uttar Pradesh, a fruit-based winery has officially opened its doors in the famed mango belt of Malihabad. Nestled within a 100-acre orchard in the Mal area, the winery promises a unique blend of innovation and tradition by producing alcoholic beverages from locally grown fruits—chief among them, mangoes.
The facility, developed with an investment of nearly ₹10 crore, was inaugurated on Sunday by UP Excise Minister Nitin Agarwal in the presence of senior officials. The initiative is seen as a major boost for agribusiness and rural entrepreneurship in the region.
The brain behind the project, Madhavendra Deo Singh, a horticulturist with an MBA in agricultural business management, said that four products are ready for launch. These include wines made entirely from fruits grown in the Malihabad region—such as mango, honey, mulberry, and mint. The price range for these fruit wines is expected to be between ₹300 and ₹1,200, with different bottle sizes available.
Singh emphasized that the winery is committed to natural production methods. “Our wines are made without chemicals, added sugars, or synthetic ethanol. We believe in preserving the purity of the fruit,” he said.
Two years ago, Singh founded Mbrosia Nature Living, the company behind the winery, and later partnered with the state horticulture department during the last investors' summit. The project gained momentum after the excise department launched its 'Made in UP' wine initiative in 2022, which waives excise duty on fruit-based wines produced within the state using local produce.
The winery also introduces a unique offering—a braggot, a hybrid alcoholic beverage that blends the characteristics of beer and mead.
A tasting experience and guided vineyard tours are also in the pipeline, expected to begin within two months. With this venture, Malihabad takes a bold step toward merging its mango legacy with a modern winemaking twist—creating opportunities for farmers and adding a new dimension to agro-tourism in the state.
