Tourist influx towards Uttar Pradesh sees new boom
Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a key driver of tourism growth in India, due to the policies and vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. As per recent reports, India has become the fifth most popular destination for global tourists, with domestic tourism, especially religious tourism, playing a pivotal role. Among the standout contributors are Ayodhya and the Braj region, the birthplaces of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, and the sacred city of Kashi (Varanasi), renowned as Lord Shiva's abode. These destinations have collectively turned Uttar Pradesh into India’s new tourism growth engine.
Uttar Pradesh: The Top Choice for Tourists
In the past seven years, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a staggering influx of nearly 200 crore tourists, including 1.26 crore foreign visitors. According to the state tourism department, the number of tourists visiting Uttar Pradesh in 2022 stood at 32.18 crore. In just the first six months of 2024, this figure surged to 32.98 crore, with Ayodhya and Kashi significantly contributing to this growth.
The grand inauguration of the Ram Mandir in January 2024 set a new benchmark, attracting 11 crore tourists in the subsequent six months. In January alone, the temple welcomed a record-breaking 7 crore visitors, the highest ever for a single destination in one month. Similarly, the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has transformed Varanasi into a tourism hotspot, drawing 4.59 crore tourists in the first half of the year. This number continues to grow with each passing month.
Infrastructure Development Driving Tourism
Recognizing the growing interest in religious tourism, the Yogi government, with support from the central government, has undertaken several projects to enhance visitor safety and convenience. Key initiatives include the Vindhya Dham Corridor in Mirzapur, the Nath Corridor in Bareilly, and the comprehensive development of the Braj region. Other projects like the Ramayan Circuit, Buddhist Circuit, Krishna Circuit, and Swadesh Darshan schemes are further expanding Uttar Pradesh's tourism appeal.
Maha Kumbh: The Pinnacle of Religious Tourism
The upcoming Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, scheduled for next year, is anticipated to be the world’s largest religious congregation, with an estimated attendance of 40 to 45 crore people. Preparations are underway on a war footing, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally overseeing the progress through frequent visits to Prayagraj.
Celebrations Enhancing Uttar Pradesh’s Attraction
Regular cultural and religious events have further elevated Uttar Pradesh’s profile as a tourist destination. The grand Diwali celebrations in Ayodhya, the Dev Deepawali in Kashi, and the Rangotsav (Holi Festival) in Mathura hold special significance and attract millions of visitors annually.
Focus on Eco and Rural Tourism
The Yogi government is also prioritizing eco-tourism and rural tourism to diversify Uttar Pradesh’s offerings. These initiatives aim to provide a more holistic experience for tourists while promoting sustainable tourism practices. With its robust infrastructure, focus on religious tourism, and commitment to eco-friendly initiatives, Uttar Pradesh is poised to remain at the forefront of India’s tourism sector for years to come.
