SGPGI rides the tech wave in style

The advanced O-Arm navigation technology is rapidly emerging as a game-changer in modern spinal surgery, offering new hope and improved outcomes for patients. At the Apex Trauma Centre of SGPGI, Lucknow, the Neurosurgery Department has successfully performed a complex minimally invasive spinal fixation surgery using a newly installed state-of-the-art O-Arm imaging and spinal navigation system. The procedure marks a significant milestone in advanced trauma care.

The surgery was performed on a patient suffering from a traumatic D10 vertebral fracture. It was carried out by Dr. Pawan Verma and Dr. Ashutosh Kumar under the expert supervision of Dr. Arun Srivastava, Head of the Apex Trauma Centre, and Prof. Avadhesh Jaiswal, Head of the Neurosurgery Department. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Vansh and Dr. Prateek Bais, ensuring seamless intraoperative support throughout the procedure.

The surgical team employed percutaneous pedicle screw fixation, a highly advanced minimally invasive technique that allows spinal stabilization through small incisions. This approach significantly reduces blood loss, minimizes tissue damage, lowers post-operative pain, and ensures smaller scars with faster patient recovery.

According to Dr. Ashutosh Kumar, minimally invasive spinal surgeries have been performed regularly at the Apex Trauma Centre over the past five years. However, the introduction of advanced C-arm imaging combined with a real-time navigation platform represents a major leap in surgical precision, safety, and overall patient care. The system provides three-dimensional, real-time imaging during surgery, enabling highly accurate placement of spinal implants even in the most complex trauma cases.

Dr. Pawan Verma highlighted that the installation of the O-Arm and navigation system strengthens the centre’s ability to deliver world-class spine and trauma care closer to patients’ homes. Patients from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions can now access advanced spinal procedures without traveling to distant metropolitan cities, making treatment more affordable and accessible.

Importantly, the facility ensures that these high-end surgical technologies are provided without additional financial burden on eligible patients, extending advanced care to economically weaker sections. The Neurosurgical team, including Dr. Ved Prakash Maurya, Dr. Soumen Kanjilal, and Dr. Shreyash Rai, continues to provide round-the-clock comprehensive trauma services.

Dr. Arun Srivastava and Prof. Avadhesh Jaiswal emphasized that this achievement reflects SGPGI’s commitment to strengthening advanced spine care services and integrating globally evolving technologies into patient treatment. Director Padma Shri Prof. Dr. R.K. Dhiman congratulated the entire team, noting that such advancements further establish SGPGIMS as a leading quaternary care center in India.

This successful surgery demonstrates SGPGI’s continued dedication to safe, precise, and minimally invasive trauma and spine care for the people of the region.
